Chaparral High School in Temecula, California, is a public high school for grades 9-12. The school opened in 1998 with a class of Freshmen and Sophomores, and added Juniors the following year and Seniors after that, graduating its first class in 2000. Ethnically the student body is 57% White, 21% Hispanic, 5% Fillipino, 5% Black, 4% Asian, 1% Native American and 7% Other.^[1] Five percent of the Student body is classified by the district as English limited. It has approximately 3000 students and 130 teachers and staff members. 11% of the student body is eligible for free government lunches compared to the state average of 45%.

SCHOOL FACTS:

Chaparral High School was the first comprehensive high school built in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. When its doors opened in 1997, there was much jockeying for the opportunity to teach at the “New “ high school. It has enjoyed much academic and extra-curricular success, including the honor of being the first high school to achieve Distinguished High School status. Principal Dan Kenley, a proud Puma himself, is quick to point out some of the unique elements of the campus, which include a comprehensive exchange program with our sister city, Voorburg, in the Netherlands. Students visited the campus as a group, and seemed enthusiastic about their experience. The Dare to Connect Program has brought the campus closer together as well. Chaparral had a chance to show its true colors and “heart” during the firestorms, and they made the most of it. Staff and students alike rallied to support the evacuees housed on their site. The Platinum Sound was founded by Jerry Burdick-Rutz who left the school after the 2004 school year to found the [Great Oak High School] music program. Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a club at Chaparral High School that prepares for a regional, state, and national Science Olympiad competitions. The Chaparral team has 4 sub-teams: Varsity, JV B, JV C, and JV D. Each team consists of 15 people. Throughout the year members prepare for their various events in the fields of science such as written tests, labs, or building events. For the past few years, Puma Science Olympiad has gone to state finals after making successful wins at regionals, but has never made it to nationals.

Theater

Along with a theater department, Chaparral also has an Improv team (C.A.T.) which has won 1st and 3rd place at the Fullerton Theater Competition.^{[citation needed]} They hold monthly shows in the Performing Arts Center on campus.^{[citation needed]}
