Concept and creation

Main characters (original version)

Warriors of the Light

In the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III, the playable characters are four children who are granted special powers from the Light Crystals to take up the Quest of Light. The four are orphans who are raised at the remote village of Ur by the priest, Topapa. When the Wind Crystal sinks to the earth due to an earthquake one day, the four, dressed as Onion Knights, go to investigate. They manage to get lost but eventually stumble upon the Crystal. The Crystal tells them of Xande's plans to conquer the world using Darkness, which could upset the balance of Light and Dark and lead to detrimental effects. It proceeds to bestow the Legendary Job Classes upon the four. From there on, the four become Warriors of the Light, and leave Ur in their quest. Granted the power of the Light, the Warriors begin to combat the darkness that increasingly consumes the world. As the other Crystals they encounter provide them more Jobs, the four become a formidable party to deal with.

Luneth

Luneth (ルーネス Rūnesu?) is the protagonist and an orphan who was raised at the remote village of Ur by the priest, Topapa. When a massive earthquake happens, Luneth goes to investigate. He falls through a hole in the cave to the north of the village and eventually stumbles upon the magical Wind Crystal. The Crystal tells him of his identity as one of the chosen Warriors of the Light, and his duty to gather three other individuals who share his destiny to save the world from eternal darkness. Thus, Luneth sets out on his journey. Curious, positive, and clever, Luneth demonstrates his ability to support others during times of crisis. Keeper of the light of courage, he is brave in speech, but there are times he will regret what he says. Even so, he is always responsible for what comes out of his mouth, and would fight until the end to deliver his promises. Also a great mood maker who can cheer up others, Luneth serves as the leader of the party.

Image File history File links Refia. ...

Refia

Refia (レフィア?) was raised by the Kazus village blacksmith, Takka. She became tired of her strict blacksmith training and ran away from home on many occasions. She first met Luneth and Arc on Cid's Airship, which she helped build, when Kazus became affected by Djinn's curse, and decided to join them. Refia has a cheerful and active personality and tends to force her opinions on others. Therefore, she is frequently at odds with Luneth, though she did seem to show some jealously when he flirted with princess Sara. She becomes one of Desch's best friends during their journey together, and she tries to help regain his memory and reunite him with his girlfriend in Canaan. She hates toads and is dismayed to realize that the party will have to change into them in order to enter the Tower of Owen. Nevertheless, she is a good-hearted and confident individual.

Image File history File links Arc_FF3. ...

Arc

Arc (アルクゥ Arukū?) is Luneth's childhood friend and was also raised by Topapa. He is a timid type who is frequently picked on by other children. In order to make others think better of him, he accompanies Luneth on his journey. Keeper of the light of kindness, Arc prefers to read books at home rather than play outside, and as such, his broad knowledge is acknowledged by everyone. Throughout his journey, he gains more confidence with the help of his friends and becomes good friends with the young Prince and then King Alus, even going so far as to stand up for him against three knights.

Image File history File links Ingus. ...

Ingus

Ingus (イングズ Inguzu?) is a soldier serving the King of Sasune. As the only individual in the castle not affected by Djinn's curse, Ingus joins Luneth and the rest in order to break the curse and return Princess Sara to the castle safely. Keeper of the light of determination, and a brave and skilled individual, he acts as the calm elder brother in the party of four, especially towards Luneth, straightening him out when he gets out of line. He's the somewhat stereotypical knight, frequently playing the gentleman and tactical expert; he has a somewhat more formal way of talking. Lady Sara makes it obvious that she likes Ingus; Ingus, on the other hand, has displayed a knight's willingness to protect her with his life, as well as signs of friendship between them. However, whether or not his feelings are purely platonic is unclear.

Supporting characters

Sara Altney

Sara Altney (サラ・アルテニー Sara Arutenī?) is the princess of Sasune who felt an overwhelming sense of duty when her kingdom was cursed by the fire demon, Djinn. As the keeper of the Mythril Ring, the only weapon powerful enough to stop Djinn, she sought out his hideout of her own accord. The heroes find Princess Sara in the Cave of the Seal, where she joins them with her curative abilities. Upon finding the Djinn, Sara aids the heroes in vanquishing him and the curse on her kingdom. She shows several signs of liking Ingus as more than a friend and protector, and is dismayed when he has to leave. However, she appeared again to help the heroes defeat the evil Cloud of Darkness, and went back with them to the floating continent in the Nautilus.

Cid Haze

Cid Haze (シド・ヘイズ Shido Heizu?) is a master airship engineer who serves directly under the king of Argus. He was initially caught by the Djinn's curse (turned all citizens invisible/ghost-like state). Once freed of the curse by the Warriors of the Light, he accompanies them to Canaan, where he and his sick wife reside. He creates the airship used by the heroes after they cure his wife of her illness. He eventually upgrades the airship and helps the heroes out with the final battle. Cid also reveals that he was the one who saved the four main characters after an airship he was piloting crashed about 10 years ago. Apparently, he also served under king Gorn as the master airship engineer, but was lost in the floating continent when his airship got caught in the darkness. Cid ) is a character who appears in all Final Fantasy series of computer and video games. ...

Desch

Desch (デッシュ Desshu?) is a powerful warrior with a bad case of amnesia. He cannot remember who he is, but knows he has a mission to do. He is found by the Warriors of Light in Bahamut's nest. He joins them in their fight against evil, and gradually recovers his memory as seen in the optional conversations with the party. As they approach one of Xande's servants, Medusa, Desch realizes he is the Ancient guardian of the Tower of Owen and that he was forced to sleep for several years. He uses his newfound knowledge to sacrifice himself and save the Warriors of Light. Later, it is revealed that Desch did not die in the Tower of Owen (but it is not shown how), and he returns to aid the heroes in their plight against the Cloud of Darkness. He then returns to the floating continent with the others and goes back to Canaan to see his girlfriend. This article or section does not adequately cite its references or sources. ...

Aria Benett

Aria Benett (エリア・ベネット Eria Benetto?) (romanized Elia Benett in certain materials) is the beautiful maiden of water. A peaceful girl, she slipped into a coma after her ship crashed into an island. The Warriors of the Light revitalize her and she immediately pleads with them to take her to the Water Shrine, as she alone can restore the Water Crystal. At the Water Shrine, Aria succeeds, but soon after, Xande's personal assassin, Kraken, enters and wounds Aria after she shoves Luneth out of the way. The Heroes vow revenge on Xande after Aria passes away in Luneth's arms.

It is also noted that Luneth had feelings of affection for Aria.

Alus Restor

Alus Restor (アルス・レストー Arusu Resutō?) is the young prince of Saronia. He joins the Warriors because of his suspicion of his father, who has been acting very strangely. He and Arc become good friends in the process. Unfortunately, Gigameth, the royal retainer of the castle, places Alus' father under a spell, causing him to set the soldiers against each other. Alus is exiled, and begins to wonder if his father has stopped loving him. With Arc's encouragement and the help of the rest of the party, he returns to the castle to meet with his father. That night, his father attempted to kill him; however, the king manages to regain control, and stabs himself instead. He dies after Gigameth's defeat, and the grieving Alus stays at the castle, promising himself that he will become a great king like his father once was. He also joins in the fight with the Cloud of Darkness to save the party from the mirrors.

Doga

Doga (ドーガ Dōga?) (romanized Dorga in certain materials) is a mysterious wizard who lives in a house guarded by mountains. After the death of his mentor, Noah, Doga was given the power of magic. Finding friendship only in Moogles, he is a recluse that doesn't care much for human interaction. He joins the heroes as they travel to the Magic Circle Cave. In order to create the dimensional keys to Xande's lair, he has the warriors fight Unei and himself to build the energy needed to form them, transforming into a giant inhuman head with a long tail. After his body dies, he helps summon the five people with pure hearts to help the heroes escape the mirror at the top of the Crystal Tower, and resurrects the heroes after the Cloud of Darkness defeats them. Different Types of Moogles Mogri summon from Final Fantasy Tactics Mog (Final Fantasy VII - PC) Moogles , originally Romanized in Japan as Moglie; however, more recent materials are consistent with the English spelling) are small fictional creatures that appear throughout the Final Fantasy, Mana (Seiken Densetsu) and Kingdom Hearts game series. ...

Unei

Unei (ウネ Une?) (romanized Unne or Une in certain materials) is a loud and hearty old woman who was given the duty of guarding the dream world by Noah. She was sentenced to sleep for eternity, but with the Lute of Noah, she awoke and helped the Warriors of the Light find the Invincible, a powerful airship that they need to reach the Ancients' Maze and Caverns of Darkness. Her only companion is a parrot, which constantly sits atop her shoulder. She also had the Heroes fight her in order to build energy for the keys, turning into a hunched, horned blue demon. She dies afterward, but her spirit resurrects the heroes after their defeat against the Dark Cloud.

Antagonists

Xande

Xande (ザンデ Zande?) is an evil sorcerer that was unhappy with the gift that Noah had given him. Instead of magic or the power over dreams, he was given mortality and life as a human. He is the leader of a cabal of villains who fight against the heroes, including Medusa and Kraken. Largely an unseen character, Xande is only seen in person just before the party fights him, unlike other main antagonists such as Exdeath, Kefka and Kuja. Xande is merely a pawn of the Cloud of Darkness. Television shows and stage plays sometimes include continuing characters — characters who are currently in frequent interaction with the other characters and who influence current story events — who are never seen or heard by the audience and only described by other characters. ...

Cloud of Darkness

The Cloud of Darkness (暗闇の雲 Kurayami no Kumo?) is a malevolent and vicious deity who wishes to push the world into a state of chaos and destruction by upsetting the balance between light and darkness, allowing the Void to consume the world. Its gender is undetermined, but while it appears female, it refers to itself as "We." Although it initially defeats the Warriors of the Light, they are resurrected with Unei and Doga's help, and, with help from the Dark Warriors, they defeat it.

Djinn

Djinn (ジン Jin?) (romanized Jinn in certain materials) is a fiendish mage with control over fire. He turns the villagers of Kazus and the kingdom of Sasune into ghostly creatures, and resides in Sealed Cave. The only way to defeat Djinn is with items made of mithril; fortunately there is a mithril mine in Kazus. He is banished by the combined effort of the heroes and Sara, using her Mythril Ring.

Gutsco the Rogue

Gutsco (グツコー Gutsukō?) is a thief with one wing, though in the DS Remake, he was given a second wing. His body is muscular and he carries a snake around his shoulders, much like Elidibs. He notoriously steals an Ice Horn from the dwarves. Upon hearing this, the Heroes agree to stop the madman. After a battle, he hides as a shadow of the Warriors of the Light. As they return to the dwarves, he reappears and steals both the horns with the power of ice. He uses them to gain entrance to the Fire Cavern, where he attempts to gain the power of the Fire Crystal. Before he is able to, the Heroes attack him. He morphs into a giant salamander, but is inevitably destroyed. This article or section does not adequately cite its references or sources. ...

Medusa

Medusa (メデューサ Medyūsa?) is a servant of Xande, guarding the Tower of Owen. She taunts them as they travel through the maze, claiming they would never find the right way. She immediately attacks them as they make it to the top, but is ultimately destroyed.

Kraken

Kraken (クラーケン Kurāken?) is an assassin employed by Xande. He is a half-man, half-octopus archer. He ambushes the Heroes as they enter the Water Cave. As he attempts to shoot a poisonous arrow at the warriors, Aria jumps in the way and saves the heroes. He then opts to battle the heroes the old fashioned way. The heroes, filled with anger over Aria's death, are able to defeat Kraken and continue on their journey

Hein

Hein (ハイン Hain?) (romanized Hayne, Hain and Hyne in certain materials) is a skeletal wizard who has kidnapped the people of Argus. Formerly an advisor for the king of Argus, he turned evil after the great earthquake and took over the Living Woods. The Heroes infiltrate his base to save the civilians, and after a grueling battle, are able to kill Hein and end the curse of the Elder Tree.

Goldor

Goldor (ゴールドル Gōrudoru?) is a flamboyant warlord who chains the heroes' airship, forcing them to seek him out. Goldor's armor protects him from all magic, which is what he is notorious for. Unfortunately for him, the heroes destroy him using physical force. In the realization of his death, Goldor destroys the Crystal he had been harboring. However, it is, in reality, a stone that can transform metal into gold.

Gigameth

Gigameth (ギガメス Gigamesu?) is the royal retainer of the kingdom of Saronia. Yearning for power, his heart was corrupted by darkness, and he became the wind fiend Garuda. He puts a spell on King Gorn, and uses him as a puppet to rule Saronia and throw it into chaos. When his plan to have Gorn kill Alus fails, he turns into his true form to kill Alus and the Light Warriors.

Minor characters

  • Noah – a powerful Magus; rumor has it that he could use white, black, and summoning magics, having the ability to summon even Leviathan and Bahamut. After his death, he gave his belongings to his students—the power of magic to Doga; the power and world of dreams to Unei; and the power of mortality to Xande.
  • Topapa (トパパ Topapa?) – the elder of the town of Ur, a wiseman who sends the heroes on their way. In the new DS version, he raised Luneth and Arc.
  • Nina (ニーナ Nīna?) – the adoptive mother of the heroes from Ur, a kind, caring woman who worries much about her children.
  • Takka – a blacksmith in Kazus village, he is Refia's adoptive father in the DS remake. Just like his daughter, he tends to force his opinions on others, and in turn usually drives Refia away with his intense smith training. However, he truly cares for her.
  • Salina – Salina is a girl who lives in Canaan. She falls in love with the mysterious Desch; when he leaves to attempt to fight Bahamut, she grows depressed over his absence and takes to lying in her bed, crying and waiting for him to come back. After learning from the Warriors of Light about Desch's fate in the Tower of Owen, she prays for his safe return.
  • Four old men – characters who believe themselves to be the true Warriors of the Light. The party runs across them a few times, and after saving them in the sewers, the old men give up, but continue to boast about their greatness. One of them helps the real heroes defeat the Cloud of Darkness by helping them overcome the Curse of the Five Wyrms.
