Charles Butler, (18021897) was an American lawyer and philanthropist. He was born at Kinderhook Landing, Columbia Co., N.Y.; studied law in the office of Martin Van Buren at Albany, N. Y.; and was admitted to the bar in 1824. He became wealthy by accumulating land at the site of Chicago, Illinois and through his investments in railways. In 1835, he was one of the founders of the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. With the exception of the Heights campus, NYU was, until recently, a commuter school.
Students at the Heights soon had the option of living in Gould Hall, Charles Butler Hall, or “table board” with private families in the area.
The dormitories at NYU remained segregated by sex until 1963, when Weinstein Hall on the Washington Square campus and Silver Hill at the Heights campus became the first co-ed dormitories.
