Charles E. "Charlie" Rice was born in 1931 in an Irish Catholic family from New York. He has been a lawyer, a legal scholar, a Catholic Apologist, and the author of 11 books. He is most famous for his historic career at the University of Notre Dame Law school in Notre Dame, IN. He began teaching there in 1969 and in 2000, earned Professor Emeritus status. He was also instrumental in the founding of the Conservative Party of New York State in the 1960s. He served as Vice-Chairman of the party from 1962-1969.


Recently he has been under fire for his criticism of the Ave Maria Law School administration's decision to move the school to Florida. Thomas Monaghan and Bernard Dobranski fired Rice as a visiting professor and removed him from the board of governors for his actions. This has caused much upheaval in the Ave Maria community as Rice is such a respected Catholic legal thinker that, to lose him was a severe blow to the faculty and the environment. Ave Maria University is a new Catholic university in Naples, Florida founded in 2003 by former Dominos Pizza founder and owner Tom Monaghan. ...
