Charles Elliot, also Charles Elliott (義律, b. 1801 - 9th September, 1875) was an Englishman born in England. He joined Royal Navy of the British Empire in 1816. He has participated in the Battle of Algiers. He severed in India, Africa and West Indies and became Admiral. He was appointed Chieft Superintendent of trade and British Minister to China in 1835 and stayed at Macao, helping British merchants to smuggle opium to Canton. He involved in the First Opium War and has signed the the Convention of Chuenpeh in 1841 that Qing would cede Hong Kong Island to British and became the first administrator of Hong Kong from January to August 1841. From 1842 to 1845 he was Chargé d'affaires in Texas. From 1847 to 1852 he was the Governor of Bermuda; from 1853 to 1856 the Governor of Trinidad; from 1863 to 1869 the Governor of Saint Helena.
