Dr. Charles Holmes Herty was a chemistry professor at the University of Georgia and the first head coach of the football team at Georgia in 1892. Herty learned the game when he studied at Johns Hopkins University following his graduation from the University Georgia. He brought football back to the University and became the "father of football" at Georgia. On January 30, 1892, the Georgia football teamplayed its first game against Mercer University in Athens, Georgia on a field that would later be named in honor of Herty. Georgia won its first game 50-0, but lost its second game of the season to Auburn University 0-10. The 1-1 1892 season was the only season that Herty coached the football team.
