Charles Humphreys (September 19, 1714 – March 11, 1786) was an American miller and statesman from Haverford, Pennsylvania. He served as a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776. He voted against the Declaration of Independence, since he believed it would inevitably escalate the Revolutionary War and that conflicted with his Quaker beliefs. He withdrew from the Congress soon afterwards. As a youth Humphreys was apprenticed to a shipbuilder in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
After the war Humphreys became an important shipbuilder in Philadelphia; and, when Congress in 1794 passed the act providing for the construction of six frigates, he was called upon to design them.
Rachel Humphrey was born on 18 February 1815 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Colonel Decius Humphrey and Laura Adams.
In 1869, Colonel Decius Humphreys wrote a letter to the author, expressing his willingness to advance this work, which was then in progress, and referring to sources of information which showed his long familiarity with the subject, and the desire which he felt that the genealogy should be brought to a successful issue.
Laura Humphrey died on 3 December 1825 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT, at age 1.
