The Charles Theatre is the oldest movie theatre in Baltimore. It is located in a Beax-Arts building that was designed in 1892 by t Jackson C. Gott. The theater was re-named to the Charles circa 1959 and became a calendar revival house in 1979. Many of John Waters' films primiered at this theatre. It derives its name from its address: 1711 N. Charles St. In 1999, it underwent a major expansion and it is now a 5-screen theatre but the original main theatre has been left largely intact.
