Charlestown is a town located in Cecil County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,019.


Geography

Charlestown is located at 39°34'36" North, 75°58'40" West (39.576617, _75.977888)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 26.02% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,019 people, 386 households, and 282 families residing in the town. The population density is 432.3/km˛ (1,124.8/mi˛). There are 451 housing units at an average density of 191.4/km˛ (497.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.94% White, 1.77% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 386 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 34.6% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 110.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $50,563, and the median income for a family is $57,644. Males have a median income of $40,104 versus $25,978 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,959. 5.1% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
