Charlestown Township is a township located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,051.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 32.5 km˛ (12.6 mi˛). 32.5 km˛ (12.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,051 people, 1,340 households, and 1,003 families residing in the township. The population density is 124.8/km˛ (323.3/mi˛). There are 1,397 housing units at an average density of 43.0/km˛ (111.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 95.36% White, 1.56% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,340 households out of which 37.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.21.


In the township the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $89,813, and the median income for a family is $101,922. Males have a median income of $77,386 versus $46,026 for females. The per capita income for the township is $41,878. 2.1% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

This township lies in range 7 north, 3 west, and is bounded on the north by Warren county, on the east by Walnut Grove township, with Emmet on the south and Blandinsville on the west.
The township was not settled until 1855 or 1856, to speak of, although a few settlers came as early as 1834.
Sciota township, according to the annual report of the county superintendent, for the school year, ending June 30, 1884, has 452 children of school age, 420 of whom are enrolled in the schools.
