Encyclopedia > Charlie Fairhead

Charlie Fairhead is the only original character left in the long-running TV Series "Casualty".


Over the last twenty years Charlie has served as the hospitals Nurse Manager. He has always demonstrated a passion for the patient's welfare and a strong sense of medical ethics.


Charlie has always shown tremendous nobility: in the opening scene of the first episode of Casualty, Charlie arrived in a wreck of a car; it transpired he had sold his superior car to pay for his mother's operation.


Charlie has had had various on-screen relationships over the years. The love of his life though was Barbara "Baz" Hayes - another original character. Baz left Casualty after the first season but returned nearly a decade later. Trapped in an unhappy marriage she persued a relationship with Charlie, ultimately becoming pregnant with their child Louis. Baz divorced her husband and married Charlie. The marriage however was later dissolved.


Baz briefly returned to the series to be by the beside of her dying father and was tragically killed herself.


Charlie himself has been brushed with death on several occassions including a shooting, a near hit and run, a coronary embellism and most recently an attempted drowning.


He recently returned to the series after a six month sabatical.


Charlie is played by Derek Thompson.
