Charlotte Auerbach (1899 - 1994) was a geneticist born in Germany but fled to Scotland because of anti-Semitism. She became well-known after 1942 when she, with AJ Clark and JM Robson, discovered that mustard gas could cause mutations in fruit flies. Charlotte Auerbach erhielt kein reguläres Stipendium und mußte deshalb zwei Jahre als Lehrerin an einer Berliner Schule arbeiten, ehe sie von 1931 bis 1933 bei Mangold ihre Untersuchungen fortsetzen konnte.
Charlotte besuchte die Auguste-Viktoria- Schule in Charlottenburg und studierte nach dem Abitur fünf Jahre Zoologie, Botanik, Chemie und Physik an den Universitäten in Berlin und Würzburg, hier bei dem berühmten Hans Spemann (1869–1941).
Dennoch gehörte Charlotte Auerbach dank ihrer Jugend, den Gutachten ihrer Berliner Kollegen und natürlich ihrer Begabung zu den glücklichen Emigrantinnen, denen es gelang, in einem fremden Land, in einer fremden Wissenschaftskultur nicht nur heimisch und akzeptiert zu werden, sondern auch bleibende Anerkennung zu finden.
