Charlton County is a county located in the Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 10,282. The county's county seat is Folkston, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,028 km˛ (783 mi˛). 2,022 km˛ (781 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,282 people, 3,342 households, and 2,499 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km˛ (13/mi˛). There are 3,859 housing units at an average density of 2/km˛ (5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 68.59% White, 29.26% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,342 households out of which 37.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 15.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.20.


In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 31.70% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 112.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,869, and the median income for a family is $33,364. Males have a median income of $26,631 versus $17,978 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,920. 20.90% of the population and 17.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.10% of those under the age of 18 and 20.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
