The Charter of the Organization of the American States (otherwise known the Charter of the OAS) is a Pan-American treaty that sets out the creation of the Organization of American States. It was signed at the 9th International American Conference of 30 April 1948, held in Bogotá, Colombia. The treaty came into effect on 13 December 1951. States that are not parties to the Convention are not subject to the friendly settlement clause.
State parties are held responsible for not committing violence against women, for preventing such violence from occurring, for enacting appropriate relevant legislation prohibiting such violence, for providing women a just legal recourse in the case of violence, and to promote social awareness and cultural acceptance of these rights of women.
