Verb: The act of contracting a ship to perform the service of hauling goods (dry or wet) or people (supercargo). The ship owner, when seeking employment for her or his vessel, is said to be seeking a Charterer to Charter (hire) her or his vessel. A Charterer is one who Charters the vessel for to move goods from one berth or port to another. The contract between the Charterer and the ship Owner is called a Charter Party. Ship brokers act on behalf of the ship Owner or the Charterer. The ship broker is responsible for negotiating the terms and conditions in the Charter Party on behalf of his respective party.
Charters were issued in medieval times by Royal decree, perhaps giving a particular town the right to hold a weekly market, or to levy a toll on a road or bridge.
