Charvas are very similar to chavs, and as of such are often considered to be the same thing, although upon closer examination there are several differences between the two. For example, a chav is often anybody who is stereotypical of the lower class, whereas charvas are often identified more distinctively for their dress sense, speech pattern and way of life. The term "chav" is also rarely used in Newcastle, where charvas are most common. Other terms also exist which refer to youth subcultures similar to the charva and chav ones; for example, in Hartlepool the term "chore" is more common for somebody with the typical traits of a charva. Look up Chav in Wiktionary, the free dictionary Chav is a derogatory slang term in popular usage throughout the UK. Origins
The term The word 'charva', along with the related 'chav', is claimed by some to derive from the Romany word "chavi", meaning "male child". Others believe that it comes from the now-extinct Northumbrian Gaelic dialect, where the word 'chava' was often used to describe an 'unruly youth'. Romany (or Romani) is the language of the Roma and Sinti, travelling peoples often referred to in English as gypsies. They came originally from northern India and parts of Pakistan, and their language belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language group. ...

Despite a long-term existence it was only in the late 1990s that 'charva' started to become common slang for the North East lower class. The term started to become popular in 2000 and 2001 with changes in youth lifestyle resulting in many subcultures, including goths and skaters, and continued to become more popular to the extent of effectively being placed permanently in to the Geordie language as the derogatory term it is often seen to be. // Events and trends The 1990s are generally classified as having moved slightly away from the more conservative 1980s, but keeping the same mind-set. ...

Although chav has become the more popular national term, in the local area near Newcastle (including Gateshead, Sunderland, Blyth and Peterlee) they are hardly heard of, due to the popularity of the charva term. Aside from its origins, it is likely that the more 'natural' sound of charva to a Geordie accent resulted in this. The subculture The origins of the charva subculture are disputed, and existed before the term having begun to form as youths started to become more independent toward the end of the 1980s. Due to the high youth crime rate in Newcastle it is likely that the origins simply came from groups of friends performing criminal acts, and slowly starting to fit the traits of 'charvaism' during the 1990s. With the rise of the term, possibly used as a simple put-down at first, the subculture began to take more prominence and by 1998 was clearly more appealing to the more unruly, antisocial youths of the North East. // Events and trends The 1980s marked an abrupt shift towards more conservative lifestyles after the momentous cultural revolutions which took place in the 1960s and 1970s and the definition of the AIDS virus in 1981. ...

The modern charva's roots are often cited to have came from unemployment in the later years of Margaret Thatcher's reign as Prime Minister, due to the rise in petty criminal tendencies spreading to children who would later become the recent charva class. As charvas are stereotypically seen as being poor and unintelligent it is also likely that it occurred through influence from the poor ghettos in America, where youths are often promoted as being involved with drugs, alcohol and guncrimes from a young age, or simply from community spirit within difficult and lower class council estates. The Right Honourable Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS (born 13 October 1925), born Margaret Hilda Roberts, is a British stateswoman and was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, the only woman as of 2005 to serve in that position. ...

A charva wearing a Burberry cap, common within the subculture The clothing of charvas is most commonly identified by the wearing of sports clothing of any brand, although some brands are stereotypically seen as more common with the subculture. Brands of jacket commonly seen include Fred Perry and Berghaus, whilst (especially in the 'charva boom' of 2001-2002) burberry is also worn by most, possibly through American influence. Socially charvas are seen as dis-obedient with a mind of their own. Charvas often stay within their own 'clan', and gang fights can be common, again backing up the theory of mild US influence. Although some can be reasonable, most commit crimes, from underage sex and drinking of alcohol, to truanting from school and stealing from local shops. A lot of youth crime in Newcastle originates from the charva subculture. Most charvas are considered to be unintelligent, and rarely show any intelligence that they may have, in order to look good around their mates. The accent The charva accent is one of the key things which separates the subculture from the similar one of chavs. Clearly deliberately, charvas tend to speak in an exaggerated accent, with sometimes limited slang vocabulary and rare use of more 'difficult' everyday terminology. The accent seems to be spoken from the back of the throat, resulting in a common-sounding, lower class voice (especially when done in the Geordie accent in normally is done in). Often a large amount of swearing is included in even the simplest sentences, and many words are randomly suffixed by terms such as "how", "arr" and, most commonly, "like". Swearing originally meant making an oath, and this usage is still used today in official and legal contexts in some countries. ...
The music Charvas are often most associated with heavy dance music, despite their origins containing a US ghetto influence, which could have meant an RnB influence. Happy hardcore and rave are the most common forms of music charvas will listen to. A very common trait of a charva is an interest in listening to New Monkey, a form of popular North East rave, which often promotes the charva lifestyle. Music is also an influence in the clear charva dislike of people they consider to be "goths" - which not only includes real goths but also such varied groups as punks, skateboarders and anyone in general who likes guitar based music. Many charvas show an interest in becoming, and some end up becoming, MCs.
