With an enrolment of approximately 920, Chatswood High School is situated on Centennial Avenue on the former Carr-Horden estate and is surrounded by bushland.

History

Schools built in Chatswood High School's concrete style were built all over Sydney; the post-Second World War baby-boomers were coming into high school. Many of them are now teaching the 2001 generation. The school had a cadet unit in those early days - for boys only. Girls wore wide-brimmed straw hats and gloves. [1]

After a pilot Gifted and Talented program with the Year 7's of 2001, Chatswood High School established a selective stream in 2002, entrance to which is based upon the NSW Selective High Schools Test. The selective students of 2002 are now studying their sixth year at Chatswood and are currently in year 12 though the majority of the school is still comprised of mainstream students.

The strengths of Chatswood High School display themselves over many different areas of study. The school's bands, for example, have had many successful overseas tours, including being the first Australian school Stage Band to be invited to the Montreaux Jazz Festival in 1996. Chatswood High School's Concert Band 1 travelled to Europe in 2004 to the Vienna International Youth and Music Festival, attaining 2nd place. More recent successes in the arts include the musical 'Guys & Dolls' which was put on in late June 2006 and the Band Tour to New Zealand in early April. More than 1 in 4 students at Chatswood High School are involved in the School's impressive music department. It is worth noting that enrolments are steadily increasing by up to 70 students each year.

Marnie

In 1990, Chatswood High School's P & C purchased a country property for use as the school's Field Studies Centre. The property, Marnie, is a few kilometres from Rylestone in NSW's Central West next to the Wollemi National Park. The property includes a cottage with accommodation for 10 people. Marnie is also used as base camp for the school's Duke Of Edinburgh expeditions, in which students from Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are able to undertake 3 and 4 day expeditions; and also as a base for music camps that practise and perform with the local country schools.

Other information

Chatswood High School also runs the Saturday School of Community Languages for junior students who wish to learn their native language and also for Senior students undertaking a HSC Language course (which may not be available at their school). The Saturday School is widely popular and caters for students from all over the Northern districts of Sydney.
