Before the February 1974 General Election Cheadle contained Hazel Grove. The population of the constituency was above the regional average and so the Hazel Grove County Constituency was created from the eastern parts of Cheadle. The seat had safe Tory majorities until the 1997 election, when the Liberal Democrats reduced the margin to around 3,000 votes.Patsy Calton scraped home in 2001 by a majority of around 30 votes, but got home by a much safer 4,000 votes in 2005.Sadly,Mrs Calton died shortly afterwards after a battle with cancer, and was replaced by fellow Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter, who won a by-election with a similar margin. The seat is a middle-class residential area for Manchester commuters, and is one of the UK's most prosperous areas. But the Lib Dems possess most of the local councillors here now, except for Bramhall, which returns Tory reps at a local level. Cheadle is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
Realigning with the county boundaries in 1983, the constituency was refashioned as a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, losing Wilmslow to Tatton, and smaller parts to Macclesfield and Stockport.
The Cheadle constituency underwent minor boundary changes after the 1992 general election and as such the change in share of vote is based on a national calculation.
