History and Trivia

Chebanse was established in 1854 as the first stop on the Illinois Central Railroad south of Kankakee, Illinois. When it was time to decide the name of the station, the story goes that a railroad employee from the eastern U.S. looked around at the proposed spot and noticed the nearby pond with wild ducks paddling around it. He must have seen a mother duck with her young brood; with his own knowledge of native tongues, he named the station "Chebanse," which is believed to mean "little duck" in some unknown Native American language.[citation needed]Harold Gray, creator of the Little Orphan Annie comic strip, grew up on a farm near Chebanse, Illinois.[citation needed] The Illinois Central (AAR reporting mark IC), sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad carrier in the central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois with New Orleans, Louisiana and Birmingham, Alabama. ...
