Cheltenham is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is shared between the Local Government Areas of the City of Bayside and City of Kingston. Cheltenham is approximately 21 km south-east from Melbourne's central business district, postcode 3192. As a suburb, it was established in the 1880s. Much of the residential development was built in the 1940s and continued into the 1980s. Cheltenham also has a large industrial area on the eastern edge and a smaller area at the far western edge. Cheltenham also has a large shopping centre to its north called Westfield Shoppingtown (Southland) which was built in 1968. It has been continually expanded over the years resulting in a bridge across Nepean Highway containing shops across it. Many new retail outlets have popped up in Cheltenham in recent years, most notably the Direct Factory Outlets. Originally built in 1996 as Fairways Market, it is a huge centre for clothing outlets, which has expanded greatly in the past 4 years.

Cheltenham Amateur Swimming Club is a registered not-for-profit association, affiliated with Swimming Victoria. The Old Cheltenham Cemetery, is located 331 Reserve Road, Cheltenham and was established October 1864. Wandering through the cemetery today, you will find the graves of many of Cheltenham's most distinguished inhabitants. You will also find memorials to some of its youngest, such as the many unnamed babies from the nearby Children's Home (the site now occupied by Southland Shopping Centre) who died as a result of disease early in the last century.
