FACTOID # 77: Moldova has one of the smallest artillery forces in Europe, and the highest rate in the world of death by powered lawnmower. Coincidence? Surely not.

Encyclopedia > Chemical oxygen generator

A chemical oxygen generator is a device that releases oxygen created by a chemical reaction. The oxygen source is usually an inorganic superoxide, chlorate or perchlorate. A promising group of oxygen sources are ozonides. General Name, Symbol, Number oxygen, O, 8 Chemical series nonmetals Group, Period, Block 16, 2, p Appearance colorless Atomic mass 15. ... Superoxide is a reactive anion and free radical, formally O2-. It is produced most easily by burning rubidium or caesium in oxygen. ... Definition The chlorate ion ClO3-. A chlorate (compound) is a compound that contains this group, with chlorine in oxidation state +5. ... Perchlorates are the salts of perchloric acid (HClO4). ... Ozonide is an unstable, reactive polyatomic anion O3-, derived from ozone, or an organic compound similar to organic peroxide formed by a reaction of ozone with an unsaturated compound. ...

The generators are usually ignited mechanically, by a firing pin. The firing pin is a very hard steel rod with a one small, rounded end for striking the primer of a cartridge. ...

The chemical reaction is making the generator a potential fire hazard. Accidental activation of improperly shipped expired generators caused the ValuJet Flight 592 crash. A large bonfire Fire is a form of combustion. ... A memorial plaque to three victims of the Flight 592 crash from Duluth, Georgia Valujet Flight 592 was a flight that flew from Miami International Airport in Miami, Florida to Hartsfield International Airport (now known as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport) in Atlanta, Georgia. ...

Potassium superoxide was used as an oxygen source on early manned USSR space missions, in fire fighting, and mine rescue. Potassium superoxide is a superoxide of potassium. ...

Oxygen candle

A chlorate candle, or an oxygen candle, is a cylindrical chemical oxygen generator containing a mix of sodium chlorate and iron powder. When ignited, the mixture smolders at about 600 °C, producing sodium chloride, iron oxide, and about 6.5 man-hours of oxygen per kilogram of the mixture. It releases oxygen in a fixed rate. The mixture has an indefinite shelf life; candles stored for 20 years shown no decrease of oxygen output. The oxygen is released by thermal decomposition, the heat is supplied by the burning iron. The candle has to be wrapped in thermal insulation, to keep the reaction temperature and to protect the surrounding equipment. sodium chlorate Sodium chlorate (NaClO3, CAS 7775-09-9) is an oxidizing agent. ... General Name, Symbol, Number iron, Fe, 26 Chemical series transition metals Group, Period, Block 8, 4, d Appearance lustrous metallic with a grayish tinge Atomic mass 55. ... Sodium chloride, also known as common salt, table salt, or halite, is a chemical compound with the formula NaCl. ... Iron oxide pigment There are a number of iron oxides: Iron oxides Iron(II) oxide or ferrous oxide (FeO) The black-coloured powder in particular can cause explosions as it readily ignites. ...

Potassium and lithium chlorate, and sodium, potassium and lithium perchlorates can be used in oxygen candles as well. Perchlorates are the salts of perchloric acid (HClO4). ...

Solid oxygen generator from MIR

The TGK generator contains a replaceable cartridge, a thin walled steel tube with a three-part block of oxygen releasing chemical. Two parts are tablets of the chemical mixture, third one is the igniter tablet with a flash igniter. The igniter is struck by a firing pin when the device is activated. One cartridge releases 600 liters of oxygen, burns for 5-20 minutes at 450-500 °C. The oxygen is cooled and filtered from dust and odors, and released into the space station atmosphere. [1] The firing pin is a very hard steel rod with a one small, rounded end for striking the primer of a cartridge. ...

Uses

Chemical oxygen generators are used in airplanes, breathing apparatuses for firefighters and mine rescue crews, submarines, and everywhere where a compact emergency oxygen generator with long shelf life is needed. They usually contain a device for absorption of carbon dioxide, usually a filter filled with lithium hydroxide; a kilogram of LiOH absorbs about half kilogram of CO2. Firefighter in full turn out gear with a pickhead axe. ... Carbon dioxide is an atmospheric gas composed of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. ... Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is a corrosive alkali. ...
