History

Chennai, the 4th largest metropolitan city in India already has multiple modes of transport. An efficient bus system is run by the Chennai MTC and is augmented by the Chennai suburban railway network run by the Southern Railway. With rapid growth of the city, the Chennai MRTS project, an elevated railway system was sanctioned in 1984 to ease congestion in central Chennai. The project, executed by the Indian Railways was badly planned and executed, and is still under construction. After the success of the Delhi metro, a similiar system was mooted for the city of Chennai by E. Sreedharan of the DMRC to the Tamil Nadu CM J. Jayalalitha[1]. Finance

The central government has agreed to partly finance the project, similiar to the aid extended to the Bangalore metro and Hyderabad metro [6].
