Founded at the end of the 1994 season following the demise of Chonbuk Buffalo, Cheonbuk joined the K-League in 1995 at the same time as Jeolla province rivals Chunnam Dragons.



Cheonbuk lifted the Korean FA Cup in 2000 and became the first side to win the trophy a second time with their 2003 victory.
