Cherdyn' was fortified to the west by a series of strongpoints, while on the east bank of the Vishera were heavy Russian artillery, protected by masses of mobile AA in the form of GAZ/Quads.
The elimination of the many strongpoints and fortifications at Cherdyn' took a considerable toll on the Luftwaffe, who had flown so many ground support mission in the first three days of fighting that they were forced to withdraw from the action to resupply and rest.
As his northern forces streamed through Cherdyn to the east, Manstein's southern forces were slugging their way through a series of strongpoints on the road to Sanchursk, desperate to maintain a timetable that would see Falc's Fallschirmjager drop in behind the city and take out its artillery just before their arrival.
