The Chernigov Governorate (Russian: Черниговская губерния; translit.: Chernigovskaya guberniya; Ukrainian: Чернігівська губернія, translit.: Chernihivs`ka guberniya) is an administrative territorial unit in the historical Left-bank Ukraine region of the Russian Empire, which was officially created in 1796. Its administrative center was the city of Chernigov (Chernihiv). The governorate consisted of 15 uyezds: Borzna, Glukhov (Hlukhiv), Gorodnia (Horodnia), Kozelets, Konotop, Krolevets, Nizhen (Nizhyn), Novgorod-Seversky (Novhorod-Siverskyi), Oster, Sosnitsia (Sosnytsia), Chernigov (within the boundaries of Ukrainian ethnic territory) and Mglin, Novozybkov, Starodub, and Surazh (part of a mixed UkrainianBelarusianRussian ethnic territory). The Chernigov Governorate covered a total area of 52,396 km², and had a population of 2,298,000, according to the 1897 Russian Empire census. In 1914, the population was 2,340,000. In 1919, the four northern uyezds were transfered to the Gomel Governorate, and in 1926 - to the Bryansk Governorate of the Russian SFSR. In 1925, the remaining territory of the Chernigov Governorate became part of Glukhov, Konotop, Nizhen, and Chernigov okrugs.
