Chesnee is located at 35 8'54" North, 81 51'43" West (35.148299, -81.861945)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km (0.9 mi ). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,003 people, 396 households, and 239 families residing in the city. The population density is 430.3/km (1,116.4/mi ). There are 460 housing units at an average density of 197.3/km (512.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city is 68.20% White, 27.52% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.99% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 4.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 396 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.6% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.18.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.9 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $25,089, and the median income for a family is $33,438. Males have a median income of $30,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,993. 24.3% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.6% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

South Carolina is bounded to the north by North Carolina; to the south and west by Georgia, located across the Savannah River; and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
