The Chessie System (674 words)
The Chessie System, as an independent railroad would last but a mere eight years, its legacy, however, continues to live on to this day.
The railroad itself was comprised of three principle railroads, the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland (which by the early 1970s was a B&O subsidiary).
It is rather interesting that a railroad, which lived essentially only 8 years, continues to hold such a mystic about it and not only has had several books written in its honor but also numerous layouts modeled after it.
Chessie System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (293 words)
The Chessie System was a holding company that operated three American railroads, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (CandO), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (BandO), and the Western Maryland Railway (WM), from 1972 until 1987, when the BandO and CandO were merged into CSX Transportation.
A chief source of revenue for the Chessie System was transportation of coal mined in West Virginia.
The signature symbol of the Chessie System was its "Ches-C", a large emblem incorporating the outline of the CandO's famous "Chessie" the kitten logo.
