Chesterfield is a town located in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,542.
It is the birthplace of former Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone, born 1872.
Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 123.2 km² (47.6 mi²). 118.0 km² (45.6 mi²) of it is land and 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.21% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,542 people, 1,366 households, and 1,005 families residing in the town. The population density is 30.0/km² (77.7/mi²). There are 1,632 housing units at an average density of 13.8/km² (35.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.80% White, 0.23% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,366 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
