Chesterhill is a village located in Morgan County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 305.


Geography

Chesterhill is located at 39°29'21" North, 81°51'55" West (39.489036, _81.865406)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.4 km˛ (0.5 mi˛). 1.4 km˛ (0.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 305 people, 131 households, and 91 families residing in the village. The population density is 218.1/km˛ (560.8/mi˛). There are 146 housing units at an average density of 104.4/km˛ (268.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 79.02% White, 15.41% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 5.57% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 131 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.78.


In the village the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $33,750, and the median income for a family is $45,833. Males have a median income of $33,636 versus $20,536 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,329. 19.8% of the population and 14.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 34.5% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

While Joseph Jones lived in Ohio River towns such as Gallipolis and Pomeroy in order to operate this leg of the Underground Railroad, his children and his cousins lived in Perry and Jackson Counties in Ohio.
Besides housing a growing collection, which needs to be displayed, and a growing library, which needs to be open to researchers, this museum would dramatize the tenacity, grit, and achievements of multiracial and multicultural people of the region and of their ancestors.
