Originally a member of the International Hockey League, the Wolves joined the AHL after the IHL folded in 2001. They are currently the AHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers. History

The team has never had a losing season during its history, including three league playoff championships. The Wolves won two Turner Cups (1998, 2000) in the IHL, and the Calder Cup in their inaugural AHL season in 2002. The Wolves qualified for every postseason except for the 2005–06 season, appearing in six league championship finals. The team's great star was forward Steve Maltais, who until his retirement after the 2004–2005 season had played every season of the franchise and holds most of its scoring records. In 2006-07, the Chicago Wolves finished second in the West Division and third in the Western Conference.
Last season the Wolves were low on veteran presence on the blue line, with the ultra-offensive Andy Delmore joining the team late in the season via trade.
