The inclusion of ketchup on a Chicago style hotdog is a controversial issue. Most adult Chicagoans will shun ketchup, and some restaurants will refuse to add it for you, instead choosing to give you disposable packets, often with a snide comment along the lines of "ruin it yourself". At the same time though, it's noted that Chicago area children tend to enjoy their dogs with ketchup, but without the rest of the accoutrements the dogs are known for. Another popular Chicago treat is a Maxwell Street Polish sausage, usually served on a plain bun with fried or grilled onions and mustard. A Maxwell Street Polish consists of a Polish sausage topped with grilled onions and mustard on a bun. ...
Chicago, known as the "City of Big Shoulders" truly does take it's cuisine seriously and heated debates are known to break out over what can and can not be put on a Chicago Dog and still have it qualify for the name. Chicagoans will also take issue with other cities claiming to make the best hot dogs around. Along the same lines, it's not unusual for an area news station to do a fluff piece all about either the history or the best location to find a good dog.
