Chickaloon is a census-designated place located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 213.


Geography

Chickaloon is located at 61°47'38" North, 148°28'58" West (61.793994, _148.482733)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 207.8 km˛ (80.2 mi˛). 205.7 km˛ (79.4 mi˛) of it is land and 2.2 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 213 people, 87 households, and 58 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1.0/km˛ (2.7/mi˛). There are 208 housing units at an average density of 1.0/km˛ (2.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 77.93% White, 1.41% Black or African American, 15.49% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.88% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 87 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 3.3% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 41.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 129.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 120.8 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $49,792, and the median income for a family is $49,792. Males have a median income of $41,827 versus $36,607 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,755. 2.8% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In the summer of 2005, 45 Alaska Native community leaders, community members, and advocates were interviewed about their definitions of Alaska Native student success and their ideas about the characteristics of effective schools for Alaska Native students.
This study came about as frustrations surfaced in the Alaska Native and research communities around the use of measures that are limited to factors such as school attendance, standardized test scores, and high school graduation and dropout rates to define Alaska Native student success.
Respondents explained that Alaska Native leaders and community members have a responsibility to partner with schools and be present in the education of Alaska Native students just as schools have a responsibility to work with local communities.

Chickaloon begins at Milepost 72 on the Glenn Highway, 26 miles northeast of Palmer in the Talkeetna Mountains.
Chickaloon was a government townsite and became the terminus of the Matanuska Branch of the Alaska Railroad around 1916.
Chickaloon is comprised of two settlements -- Chickaloon Native Village and the non-Native area represented by the Chickaloon Community Council.
