The Chief Cabinet Secretary (naikakukan bōchōkan 内閣官房長官) is a member of the Japanese Cabinet. He coordinates the activities of the ministries and agencies, conducts policy research, and prepares materials to be discussed at cabinet meetings. Although the Chief Cabinet Secretary does not formally carry ministerial rank, the position is influential within the cabinet because of its coordination role. In practice, however, every Chief Cabinet Secretary since World War II has also been simultaneously given the rank of Minister of State (国務大臣).
