Encyclopedia > Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey

Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey' (born in 1942 in Idogo) is a Nigerian popular musician, a contemporary and rival of some of the country's biggest stars, including King Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti. He began his professional career in the mid-1950s, after moving to Lagos. He formed a band called The International Brothers in 1964. They played a kind of highlife-juju fusion that caught on after their first hit, "Ewa Wowun Ojumi Ri". Obey began experimenting with Yoruban percussion style and expanding on the band by adding more drum kits, guitars and talking drums.
