The chigoe flea (Tunga penetrans; also known as Sarcopsylla penetrans or Pulex penetrans) is a parasitic arthropod found in tropical climates, especially South America and the West Indies. The breeding females of this insect burrow into exposed skin and lay eggs, causing strong irritation and itching in a disease called tungiasis. If left inside the skin this may lead to infection or other dangerous complications. Tungiasis is a skin infestation of the Tunga penetrans flea (also known as chigoe flea, jigger, nigua or sand flea), found in the tropical parts of Africa, Caribbean, Central and South America, and India.
This orifice allows the chigoe flea to breathe while feeding on blood vessels in the cutaneous and subcutaneous dermal layer.
Preventing infection by chigoe flea is easily achieved by wearing shoes when traveling in endemic regions and spraying insecticides on infested soil.
