Origin of name

Chikkamagaluru literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna and hence the name. As one can guess, there is indeed a town called Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter" which is about 5 km from Chikkamagaluru city. Kannada - aptly described as sirigannada (known to few as Kanarese) is one of the oldest Dravidian languages and is spoken in its various dialects by roughly 45 million people. ...


Getting there

By Road

From the state capital Bangalore, Chikkamagaluru can be reached on road by two routes, one would be by taking the National Highway NH-206 via Tumkur, Arsikere and reaching a town called Kadur. A left turn deviation from Kadur takes one to Chikkamagaluru. Alternate route would be to take NH-48 and reach Hassan. From Hassan, one can go to Chikkamagaluru via Belur. By Rail

Chikkamagaluru unfortunately is not yet connected by rail. There is a proprosal however to get railway into Chikkamagaluru within the next few years. The nearest railhead to reach Chikkamagaluru would be Kadur station. Kadur has frequent trains from Bangalore. Birur is also a good alternative because of it being a junction, more trains stop at Birur than at Kadur. Hassan is another city with a railway station that can be used to reach Chikkamagaluru. The hillstations around Chikkamgaluru are famous summer retreats since they remain cool even during summers. The temperature of the city however varies from 17-20 deg. Centigrade during winter to 32-35 deg. Centigrade during summer

The climate around Chikkamagaluru is ideal for growing coffee and coffee plantations dot the mountains around Chikkamagaluru. Trading of coffee forms the major part of the business in the city.


Apart from that, Chikkamagaluru recieves a fair share of tourists and tourism also plays a major role in the economy of the city.

Chikkamagaluru Karnataka state is known for its rich cultural and religious plurality as well as for maintaining peace even amidst communal strife that has plagued our country in recent times.
It is home for many syncretic religious centres which stand as living testimony to her unique tradition of tolerance and communal harmony.
The Baba-Datta cave shrine on Bababudangiri near Chikkamagaluru is an example of one such great tradition where people of different faiths seek their God in a common shrine.
