There is a saying that Chilaw is famous for 'Crabs, Sri Lanka.


A famous visitor was the 'Father of India' the great Mahatma Gandhi who visited Chilaw in 1927 on his first and last visit to Ceylon. He stayed in Chilaw in a Corea home called ' Sigiriya'.
