Encyclopedia > Chimera (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Referred as a most inhumane form of Alchemy by some, a Chimera is the fusion of two or more different species into a single being. One of Basque Grand's dark projects involve creating "beast-man" chimeras for militant purposes, with help from Shou Tucker (who grew to despise this work, especially when it affected his personal life and drove him mad) and other Alchemists (some of whom regret it). The Elrics encountered both types of Chimera, though only the 'Beast-Men' types have more impact in the story. Chimera on a red-figure Apulian plate, ca 350-340 BCE (Musée du Louvre) In Greek mythology, the Chimera (Greek Χίμαιρα (Chímaira); Latin Chimaera) is a monstrous creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, which was made of the parts of multiple animals. ...

Human Chimeras

Some unidentified chimeras are seen hanging around with Greed in the Devil's Nest and later fighting against the military. In the manga, a chimera called Ulchi, who (according to the men standing outside Devil's Nest) is fused with a crocodile, confronts Izumi as she approaches the Devil's Nest to find Al. However, before he can attack Izumi, Sig comes and beats him senseless. Ulchi is shown later being shot by the military as they infiltrated the bar. In chapter 71, some (or all) of Kimbley's bodyguards are chimeras. Two of them spotted Scar on chapter 71, during Scar's manhunt. They managed to corner him, but as the manga continued in chapter 72, Edward and Alphonse appeared on the scene. The chimeras began to explain that they were the brothers' allies (as they were were Kimbley's men and were partially dressed in military uniform [the transformation from semi-human, semi-chimera to full chimera had ripped the majority of clothing]) and that they had apphrehended Scar, but instead the Elrics "thought" that they were "ugly monsters", resulting in the chimeras being quite badly beaten up. In chapter 73, after being "lectured" by Alphonse (for being hopeless at chance of getting their old life back), they agreed to cooperate with Marcoh and Scar.

Another chimera suggested to Greed that they simply dissect Al instead of waiting for Ed to show up. This chimera could turn his hand into a sharp claw-like entity.

In the anime, some of the Chimeras Shou Tucker was commissioned to produce for the Lior invasion were human, though their forms were more monstrous.

Tucker's position as State Alchemist and all the privileges consequent depended on his research showing fruit, since Tucker's alchemic abilities were useless in a direct battle.
