It is located at 35°41′ N 117°40′ W, in the northeast of California's Mojave Desert. A survey of remote mountain lakes throughout Europe found that even lakes far from human development were acidified by sulfur and nitrogen deposition and that virtually all were contaminated by heavy metals (such as mercury, lead, and cadmium) and fly ash particles.
Lakes are not only reservoirs of fresh water and a source of food, but also important habitats for aquatic organisms and waterfowl.
