It's easy to confuse this rifle with the Chinese Type 56 Carbine because of the name, but they are two very different rifles and are based on two different designs. Strangely, the "carbine" is actually 15 cm longer than the standard military rifle. This discrepancy is due to the fact that the official designation of the "Type 56 Assault Rifle" in Chinese is "Type 56 submachine gun", so a squad would have both type 56 rifles and type 56 submachine guns together. The Chinese Type 56 Carbine is just a Chinese built copy of the Russian Simonov SKS.
