Yau entered the Hong Kong film industry through a beauty pageant. She competed in the 1989 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant but only took the title of Miss Photogenic. This was enough to win her several film roles. Her career did not take off until she became involved with Hong Kong film director Wong Jing, even though he was married at the time, and who cast her in a series of Category III films. In 1997 she split up with Wong and her career slowed down significantly.
