Chinle (Navajo Chʼínílį́) is a census-designated place located in Apache County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 5,366.


Geography

Chinle is located at 36°9'17" North, 109°34'45" West (36.154718, _109.579040)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 41.5 km² (16.0 mi²). 41.5 km² (16.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,366 people, 1,358 households, and 1,076 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 129.2/km² (334.7/mi²). There are 1,644 housing units at an average density of 39.6/km² (102.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.28% Native American, 6.39% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.17% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,358 households out of which 52.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% are married couples living together, 30.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.84 and the average family size is 4.43.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 43.9% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $27,324, and the median income for a family is $26,182. Males have a median income of $25,321 versus $22,663 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $8,755. 43.5% of the population and 40.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 52.6% of those under the age of 18 and 46.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
