Chippewa County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 13,088. Its county seat is Montevideo6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,522 km˛ (588 mi˛). 1,509 km˛ (583 mi˛) of it is land and 13 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,088 people, 5,361 households, and 3,597 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (22/mi˛). There are 5,855 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.78% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 5,361 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 6.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 29.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 20.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,582, and the median income for a family is $45,160. Males have a median income of $30,556 versus $20,384 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,039. 8.60% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.80% of those under the age of 18 and 9.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
