Chitra Singh is a famous Ghazal singer. Her husband Jagjit Singh is also a Ghazal singer and they formed one of the most popular duet teams in Ghazals. The couple is considered as pioneers in modern ghazal singing. Chitra singh (Née Dutta), born in a Bengali family had no formal musical traing but had strong roots of music in her family and learnt much of er music by listening to her mother's guru. Chitra singh met Jagjit singh in Bombay and both used to sing jingles for various ads, and thus started a career together. Their career as a group took off with the lanching of the Unforgettables, the album which had several firsts to its credits, revolutionised the concept of Ghazal ghayaki, which until now was confined to mehfils and elite of the society.


Along with ghazals, the duo sang and composed for Hindi, Punjabi and Bengali albums. They contributed to devotional music by releasing albums such as Krishna, Chirag, Hey Ram, Shabads. Indeed Krishna is one of the largest selling title in its category.


After the untimely death of her son Vivek singh, Chitra ceased to be a singer and confined herself to a private world. She has been learning and working on different forms of spirituality and believes in psychic healing methods.


Many of the duo's fans still miss her splendid voice which gave songs such as yeh tera ghar, Tum aao to sahi, saare badan, mitti da bawa etc etc.

Sometimes people say Chitra Singh's voice and technique are not as refined as Jagjit's and that her work is not as compelling as his is. At times I agree with that view.

Jagjit Singh (February 8, 1941 -) is a popular singer of ghazals in Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi, a composer and also a playback singer in Bollywood.
His father Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman, employed with the Government of India, hailed from Dalla village in Ropar district of Punjab and his mother Sardarni Bachchan Kaur came from a deeply religious Sikh family of Ottallan village near Samralla.
Jagjit Singh, with Chitra, has contributed immensely towards changing the course of this genre of music known as 'Ghazal' making it more ear friendly, melodic and enojoyable by a wider audience.
