Chittaranjan Park
Chittaranjan Park or C.R. Park, as it is popularly known by Delhi-ites is the settlement colony of the people who were originally displaced from Bangladesh after the partition. Since the time it came into existence the geography, demography and landsacpe have seen immense changes. Till the the early 90s C.R. Park was a colony of 90-95% Bengalis and after that C.R. Park started witnessing an influx of Non- Bengalis when the old houses were started to be demolished for new flats. Nonetheless C.R.Park has retained its vibrancy and splendour with the Kali Temple perched on top of a small hillock and the omnipresent fish markets. Much of the colony is dotted with beautifully designed Bungalows and 2-3 floor houses, lined with green trees. C.R. Park comes alive during the months of September - November when the original bengali families celebrate Durga Puja and Kali Puja with zest and fervour. If you ever visit C.R. Park don't forget to have a taste of the mouth-watering Bengali Delicacies. Location: South Delhi. The Neighbourhood The neighbourhood is still largely the preserve of Bengalis, though not all of them are necesaarily displaced persons or their descendants, since the status of the neighbourhood as a centre of Bengali life in Delhi has led to its being a magnet for many non-refugee Bengalis. In addition, rising property prices and a prime location in the heart of South Delhi have led to an influx of people from other linguistic communities, so that the neighbourhood is now ethnically more diverse than before. It remains a major centre of Bengali cultural life in New Delhi, with several Durga Puja celebrations renowned throughout the city for their elaborate pandals.
