History
The Kingdom of Mewar was founded by Bappa Rawal, of the Guhilot or Guhila clan of Rajputs, who established himself as ruler of Mewar in 734, with Chittor garh (Chittor fort) as his capital. Chittorgarh was captured by the Sultan of Delhi Ala ud din Khilji in 1303, and recaptured by the Guhila rana (king) Hamir Singh in 1326, who renamed the clan Sesodia after the village where he was born. By the 16th century Mewar had become the leading Rajput state, and Rana Sangha of Mewar led the combined Rajput forces to defeat against the Mughal Babur in 1527. After the Mughal Emperor Akbar captured Chittorgarh in 1568, the capital was moved west to Udaipur, in a more defensible location in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, where the Sesodia rana (king) Udai Singh II had established a residence in 1559. Udaipur remained the capital of the kingdom until it acceded to India in 1947. The Sesodias became tributaries of the Mughals in 1613, but regained their independence in the 18th century as the empire went into decline. The Sesodias resisted the assaults of the Marathas, acknowledging British sovereignty in the early 19th century in return for protection from the Marathas. Mewar became a princely state in Rajputana agency in 1818, which was renamed Rajasthan after India's independence in 1947. A Rajput (from Sanskrit rāja-putra, son of a king) is a member of a prominent caste who live throughout northern and central India, primarily in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, although not all Rajputs find their origin in Rajasthan. ...
