Chittenden County is a county located in the state of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 146,571. Its county seat is Burlington6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,605 km˛ (620 mi˛). 1,396 km˛ (539 mi˛) of it is land and 209 km˛ (81 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 13.01% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 146,571 people, 56,452 households, and 35,169 families residing in the county. The population density is 105/km˛ (272/mi˛). There are 58,864 housing units at an average density of 42/km˛ (109/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.14% White, 0.91% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.99% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 56,452 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.30% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.70% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.02.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 13.10% from 18 to 24, 32.00% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 9.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $47,673, and the median income for a family is $59,460. Males have a median income of $38,541 versus $27,853 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,501. 8.80% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.00% of those under the age of 18 and 8.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Chittenden Superior Court is the largest civil court in Vermont with an annual caseload of over 3300 civil cases, 1712 of which are Small Claims involving damages of $3,500 or less.
Chittenden, like all other counties in Vermont, has two elected Assistant Judges who are responsible for County affairs in addition to their court responsibilities.
Chittenden Superior Court also handles all passport processing for Chittenden County and houses Probate Court which is responsible for wills, settlement of estates, adoptions, guardianships, name changes and uniform gifts to minors.
