Choked flow is a hydrodynamic condition caused by the Venturi effect. Fluid or gas that flows through a restriction in a pipe or other passage has reduced pressure in the restriction due to the Venturi effect. If the flow is fast enough, then the pressure in the restriction drops to zero. Negative pressures are not normally possible to achieve, so the flow is limited to this rate regardless of the pressure on the downstream side of the restriction. Choked flow is useful because it limits the flow rate through a spigot or butterfly valve regardless of the viscosity or density of the fluid. The choked flow rate through a restriction is proportional to the square root of the ambient pressure, times the cross-sectional area of the restriction. The initial instantaneous flow rate from a leak in a pressurized gas system or vessel is much higher than the average flow rate during the overall release period because the pressure and flow rate decrease with time as the system or vessel empties.
