Choked flow is a hydrodynamic condition caused by the Venturi effect. Fluid or gas that flows through a restriction in a pipe or other passage has reduced pressure in the restriction due to the Venturi effect. If the flow is fast enough, then the pressure in the restriction drops to zero. Negative pressures are not normally possible to achieve, so the flow is limited to this rate regardless of the pressure on the downstream side of the restriction. Choked flow is useful because it limits the flow rate through a spigot or butterfly valve regardless of the viscosity or density of the fluid. The choked flow rate through a restriction is proportional to the square root of the ambient pressure, times the cross-sectional area of the restriction. Hydrodynamics is fluid dynamics applied to liquids, such as water, alcohol, oil, and blood. ... The initial instantaneous flow rate from a leak in a pressurized gas system or vessel is much higher than the average flow rate during the overall release period because the pressure and flow rate decrease with time as the system or vessel empties.
The purpose of this article is to present and explain two published source-term models for calculating the time-dependent decrease in pressure, temperature and weight of gas in a pressurized gas system or vessel during an accidental release.
Chokedflow is also referred to as sonic flow and it occurs when the ratio of the source gas pressure to the downstream ambient atmospheric pressure is equal to or greater than [ (k + 1) / 2 ]
Flow computing packages are also available that accept the inputs of the d/p transmitter and the other sensors and can simultaneously calculate mass and volumetric flow.
At the low flow velocities typical of laminar conditions, pitot tubes are not recommended because it is difficult to find the insertion depth corresponding to the average velocity and because the pitot element produces such a small pressure differential.
Rotameters are inherently self cleaning because, as the fluid flows between the tube wall and the float, it produces a scouring action that tends to prevent the buildup of foreign matter.
