Chongqing Normal University Founded in 1954, Chongqing Normal University (hereafter as "CNU") is one of the earliest higher teachers training institutions after the founding of P. R. China. After about 50 years' development, CNU has developed into a comprehensive higher institution focusing on teachers' training. The university is one of the first universities authorized by the National Degree Committee to award Bachelors' Degree and one of the third universities to award Masters' Degree in 1986. CNU is designated as the only "Chinese Language Education Center for Overseas Chinese" in west China by the Overseas Chinese Affairs of the State Council, the only "Key National Vocational Teachers Training Center" in Chongqing and " Information Technology and Applied Distance Education Center" by the Ministry of Education of China and "Garden Campus" by Chongqing Municipal Government. The university covers an area of over3000 Mus and the total construction area is 360,000 square meters. The university is well equipped for teaching and researching, and has established some modern laboratories and centers such as Computer Center, Network Center, Modern Education Technology Center and Digital and Imitational Phonetic Lab. Furthermore, Tian Jiabin Education Center, Vocational Education Building, No. 2 Teaching Building, International Academic Exchange Center, Multi-functional Stadium, the new campus are all under construction. With a collection of over 1,200,000 books, 8,000 foreign and domestic periodicals and newspapers, the university library is the third largest one in Chongqing. At present, in the university, there are 9 colleges, 19 departments, 3 branch campuses, 28 programs for masters' degree, 40 full time undergraduate programs, 4 key disciplines, 3 key laboratories and 2 key social science research centers at provincial level. The university has a staff of more than 1800, among them there are 103 professors or researchers, over 300 associate-professors or researchers, 5 doctoral program tutors, 94 master program tutors, 26 professors or researchers who have been awarded "the National Special Government Subsidy for Great Contribution", 18 recipients of "Zeng Xianzi Education Award" and 30 other well-known experts. Currently, there are over 13,000 full-time domestic and international graduate, undergraduate students, over 20000 adult education and self-teaching students. Since 1954, more than 70,000 students including some outstanding scientists and experts like professor Ma Zhiming, the member of Chinese Academy of Science, the chairman of executive council of Mathematic Association of China, the director of Applied Mathematics Institute of Chinese Academy of Science have graduated from the university and professor Yang Xinmin, the recipient of the National Labor's Medal of May First, Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Chinese Young Scholars, Award for Flourishing Chongqing with Special Contribution . The university insists upon centering on science and research and tries its best to carry out quality education. There are 32 research institutes and centers in the university. A group of influential achievements have been achieved. For instance, the university has been granted 2 national level awards, 5 first-class awards, 20 second-class awards at provincial level. In the university, there are journals called the Journal of Chongqing Normal University (Natural Science Edition), the Journal of Chongqing Normal University (Social Science Edition), Geography Education, Contemporary Preschool Education which are available both at home and abroad. The university pays much attention to international exchange and cooperation and has subsequently established long term exchange and cooperation relationships with educational institutions of America, Russia, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, just mention a few. The university keeps on motivation of reform, gradually carries out the system of appointing all staff members. A series of measures of awarding high level research programs have been taken, which have greatly elicited initiatives of the staff members. The Strategy of "Revitalizing the Country by Science and Education" and "West China Development" brings Chongqing Normal University new opportunities. The university is developing on the basis of the strategy of "personnel-orientated, teaching and researching centered, reform-motivated, development-themed."
