Charan Singh was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly in 1937 from Chhatrauli, and represented the constituency again in 1946, 1952, 1962, and 1967.
A dedicated public worker and staunch believer in social justice, he has authored several books and pamphlets, including Abolition of Zamindari, Co-Operative Farming X-Rayed, India's Poverty and its Solution, Peasant Proprietorship or Land to the Workers, and Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum.

Ajit Singh plunged into politics in the late eightees and was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1986.
Singh formed his own faction of the Lok Dal called Lok Dal (Ajit) in 1987 and a year later merged it with the Janata Party of which he became the president.
